{"id":1246,"date":"2014-05-30T13:37:58","date_gmt":"2014-05-30T13:37:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenfreshveggies.com\/?p=1246"},"modified":"2014-05-30T13:37:58","modified_gmt":"2014-05-30T13:37:58","slug":"a-peck-of-potatoes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/?p=1246","title":{"rendered":"A Peck of Potatoes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s First Monday weekend, and you know what that means! \u00a0It means Gopher Knoll will be at the great <strong>Athens, TX Farmer&#8217;s Market<\/strong>!!<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0some really fun veggies on tap this month!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gardengoodness4u.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/05\/potatoes1-e1401421121495.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1247\" src=\"http:\/\/gardengoodness4u.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/05\/potatoes1-e1401421121495.jpg?w=570\" alt=\"Potatoes1\" width=\"570\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/potatoes1-e1401421121495.jpg 959w, http:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/potatoes1-e1401421121495-300x262.jpg 300w, http:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/potatoes1-e1401421121495-768x672.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like Patriotic Potatoes! \u00a0Really &#8211; Red, White and Blue &#8211; through and through!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Potatoes<\/strong> &#8211; all of them &#8211; originated in the Andean mountain regions of Peru and Bolivia. \u00a0 They have been cultivated over the past 7,000 or so years, first in South America and then across the world, arriving in North America about 400 years ago. \u00a0We&#8217;ve pretty much loved them ever since. \u00a0 \u00a0And the best way to enjoy them is fresh from a (naturally grown, chemical free) garden!<\/p>\n<p>Remember that the colorful veggies have the highest antioxidant capacity &#8211; in other words, the capacity to help our bodies defend and recover from the\u00a0damages caused by sunshine, age\u00a0or various toxins we encounter in our world.<\/p>\n<p>Colorful potatoes are no different.\u00a0\u00a0 These purple ones, <a href=\"http:\/\/albertbartlett.co.uk\/potatoes\/purple-majesty\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Purple Majesty<\/strong><\/a>, are reputed to have the highest antioxidant levels of all. \u00a0 In our own official taste-testing, the Purple Majesty won the home-fry challenge against our usual front-runner, <strong>Yukon Gold<\/strong>. \u00a0 \u00a0 And don&#8217;t leave out the beautiful (and tasty) <strong>Mountain Rose<\/strong>! \u00a0Add some color, flavor and\u00a0an extra dose of &#8216;healthy&#8217; to your next potato dish.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are the fingerling potatoes. \u00a0Pretty colors, freshly dug for that &#8220;new potato&#8221; tenderness and flavor. \u00a0No need to peel or chop. \u00a0Just wash them and throw them in the pot (or the roasting pan, or on the grill). \u00a0The small size is just right for &#8211; well, almost everything!<\/p>\n<p>Season them properly with\u00a0<strong>Red Onions, Texas Sweet onions and White Bermudas<\/strong>. \u00a0Garlic: \u00a0<strong>Red Toch and Red Inchelium softneck garlic, green garlic and even a few garlic scapes<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kohlrabi<\/strong> and <strong>Kale<\/strong> (Dutch Blue and Dinosaur).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Patty Pan, Lemon and Tatume summer squashes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Calima french beans.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swiss Chard.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chioggia Beets.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Multi-color carrots.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Parsnips.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Radicchio.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Summer veggies are just kicking into production, which means there isn&#8217;t a lot to be had yet, so come early for a good selection. \u00a0We&#8217;ll sell out of some of those pretty quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Because the Old Fiddler&#8217;s Reunion (and carnival) are happening, too, the market has moved for this week only. \u00a0We&#8217;ll be in front of the Henderson Country Justice Center &#8211; kitty corner from the square on the SW. \u00a0As usual, you&#8217;ll find us beside Henrietta (the beautiful Ford Model A Huckster).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s First Monday weekend, and you know what that means! \u00a0It means Gopher Knoll will be at the great Athens, TX Farmer&#8217;s Market!!
