{"id":1980,"date":"2015-05-09T02:00:31","date_gmt":"2015-05-09T02:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenfreshveggies.com\/?p=1980"},"modified":"2015-05-09T02:00:31","modified_gmt":"2015-05-09T02:00:31","slug":"second-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/?p=1980","title":{"rendered":"Second Monday!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, we missed the first one &#8211; so we&#8217;ll be at market THIS weekend!<\/p>\n<p>The garden is finally looking good, although things are growing more slowly than usual due to the amount of rain and lack of sunshine. \u00a0We did get to pick the first good mess of beans this morning!<\/p>\n<p>Wish I could post a picture, but the photos won&#8217;t upload to the website right now. \u00a0I&#8217;ll try again to get a slide show up later on.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll have lots of spring greens at market this weekend &#8211; along with beautiful <strong>spring onions<\/strong> and <strong>green garlic<\/strong>. \u00a0There will be <strong>Mervielles des quatre saison<\/strong> (4-season marvel) lettuce. \u00a0<strong>Crisp mint romaine<\/strong> and the deep red<strong> &#8220;garnet rose&#8221; romaine<\/strong>. \u00a0Some beautiful <strong>butterhead lettuce<\/strong> and another called<strong> Ice Queen<\/strong>. \u00a0 The last of the <strong>mache<\/strong> (corn salad). \u00a0This will be the only time this spring we&#8217;ll have these lettuces, as the weather will simply be too warm for them after this. \u00a0 I&#8217;ll make up a few bags of spring<strong> mixed greens<\/strong> including some bloomsdale spinach, new zealand spinach, arugula, mizuna, &amp; corn salad.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll have a beautiful kale mix including <strong>scarlet kale, dutch blue curly, lacinato and red russian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of delicious\u00a0<strong>swiss chard!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Will also have some fresh herbs &#8211; <strong>\u00a0parsley, cilantro, oregano, thyme, peppermint, spearmint and dill.<\/strong> \u00a0Get some good pickling cukes from the good folk at Hwy 19 Produce (they&#8217;ll be at market, too) and pick up some fresh dill to make those perfect pickles.<\/p>\n<p>And some tomato starts &#8211; I had extra of the <strong>Texas Wild tomato<\/strong>. \u00a0This is the only tomato I know of that actually has acclimated to growing wild in Texas &#8211; which means it tolerates our heat and normally dry conditions. \u00a0 The Texas Wild is a currant tomato, producing a very small and tasty fruit. \u00a0Unlike other tomatoes, it is insect pollinated and will need to be planted apart from other tomato plants if you plan to save seed.<\/p>\n<p>And finally will have starts for your herb garden. <strong>\u00a0German chamomile, echinacea purpura, Thai basil and sweet basil<\/strong>. \u00a0Interplanting herbs among your tomatoes and squash may well help to repel some of the bugs.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, we don&#8217;t have large quantities of any given thing (except maybe swiss chard), so come early for best choice.<\/p>\n<p>See you in the morning!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, we missed the first one &#8211; so we&#8217;ll be at market THIS weekend!
