{"id":2108,"date":"2015-06-05T12:17:04","date_gmt":"2015-06-05T12:17:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenfreshveggies.com\/?p=2108"},"modified":"2015-06-05T12:17:04","modified_gmt":"2015-06-05T12:17:04","slug":"silver-linings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/?p=2108","title":{"rendered":"Silver Linings&#8230;&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just want you to know there are silver linings behind all those rain clouds we had for so long.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gopherknoll.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/bull-nettle-e1433474465343.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2109\" src=\"http:\/\/gopherknoll.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/bull-nettle-e1433474465343.jpg?w=660\" alt=\"bull nettle\" width=\"660\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/bull-nettle-e1433474465343.jpg 1581w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/bull-nettle-e1433474465343-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/bull-nettle-e1433474465343-768x579.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/bull-nettle-e1433474465343-1024x772.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/bull-nettle-e1433474465343-1200x905.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One might be that really difficult &#8216;weeds&#8217; like bull-nettle are much easier to dig out when the ground is so soft.<\/p>\n<p>Not easy, mind you. \u00a0Just easier.<\/p>\n<p>We had to dig this one now because sweet potatoes are waiting to be planted right there.<\/p>\n<p>Another plus would be the pretty Cherokee Purple tomatoes in the background. \u00a0They have such a great set of fruit this year, thanks, in part, to the cooler weather. \u00a0They are not quite ready for market yet, but getting close. \u00a0By next First Monday weekend, we&#8217;ll have plenty of heirloom tomatoes for you.<\/p>\n<p>We won&#8217;t wait that long to see you again, though. \u00a0<em><strong><span style=\"color:#993300;\">We&#8217;ll be at market this weekend, too!<\/span> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lots of good heirlooms are already ready! \u00a0\u00a0 By Friday,\u00a0\u00a0we should be able to drive past the mud-holes and down to the garden to pick up harvest.<\/p>\n<p>This weekend, we&#8217;ll have new potatoes &#8211; <strong>Purple Majesty, Mountain Rose and Fingerling potatoes<\/strong>. \u00a0Quite the treat for the eyes as well as the palate. \u00a0Purple Majesty, in particular, has the highest level (among potatoes) of chemicals called anthocyanins &#8211; the anti-oxidants that help our bodies repair damage from sun and stress.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll have <strong>Texas sweet, white bermuda, and sweet red onions<\/strong> as well as some<strong> red scallions<\/strong>. \u00a0We&#8217;ll harvest a few of the smaller garlics, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rat-tail radish<\/strong> will be back this week! \u00a0This is the aerial radish we introduced last year. \u00a0We eat the seed-pod rather than the root. \u00a0They have the bite and crispness of a radish in a finger-friendly package. \u00a0 We&#8217;ll have some for sampling, as well as some<strong> kohlrabi.<\/strong> \u00a0 This will be our last week to offer kohlrabi until fall. \u00a0Hope you won&#8217;t miss the chance to try it.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll have <strong>New Zealand spinach, Swiss chard,<\/strong> a small amount of<strong>\u00a0Scarlet, Dutch Blue and Lacinato kale.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Some huge, beautiful <strong>Frisee endive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Plenty of fresh herbs: \u00a0<strong>oregano, thyme, peppermint, spearmint, lemon balm, dill, sage, and cilantro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Hope we get to see you there!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just want you to know there are silver linings behind all those rain clouds we had for so long.
