{"id":2575,"date":"2018-10-09T17:46:33","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T22:46:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/?p=2575"},"modified":"2018-10-09T17:46:41","modified_gmt":"2018-10-09T22:46:41","slug":"spring-planting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/?p=2575","title":{"rendered":"Spring planting?!?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>So you ARE getting ready for spring, right?\u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s almost mid-October!\u00a0 \u00a0Yes, we are cleaning up from last summer, harvesting fall veggies and getting bee hives ready for winter&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And starting spring planting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Onion-starts.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2576\" width=\"335\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Onion-starts.jpg 4160w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Onion-starts-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Onion-starts-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Onion-starts-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 335px) 100vw, 335px\" \/><figcaption>Seeding onions for spring!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is the time to start our big sweet red onions and Texas 1015s from seed.\u00a0 It&#8217;s almost impossible to find organic onion starts in January, when we want to set them out in the field.\u00a0 \u00a0If you do find some, they are way too expensive for serious farming.\u00a0 \u00a0So we start our own from organic seed!\u00a0 In October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is the time to put out clover and wildflower seed for next spring&#8217;s clover honey harvest!\u00a0 These need time to sprout and set down roots before our freezes drive them down for a while.\u00a0 Then, in early spring, they&#8217;ll be back!\u00a0 Some of the wildflowers need the winter cold to prepare them to germinate in February.\u00a0 Plant them now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is the time to plant strawberries!\u00a0 Check out Highway 19 Produce and Berries on Facebook and see how they&#8217;re doing it.\u00a0 \u00a0 Not all strawberries are started in the fall, so talk to a local nursery about which varieties do best in our climate and when to plant them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is the time to put out elbon rye as a cover crop over ground that would otherwise be exposed.\u00a0 This grass grows during the winter and when tilled gently in early spring, breaks down to add organic matter and nitrogen back to the soil.\u00a0 In the process, it also fumigates the soil to help control the root-knot nematodes that challenge our tomatoes and okra in summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is the time to plant garlic!\u00a0 We get the best crop when we plant next year&#8217;s crop in the fall, giving it more time for root development.\u00a0 \u00a0 Don&#8217;t have any?\u00a0 Try planting some cloves of organic garlic from a grocery store.\u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s easy to plant and fun to harvest &#8211; next May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0Have fun carving your pumpkins and roasting your turkey.\u00a0 \u00a0 And get ready for spring!\u00a0 It&#8217;s just around the bend!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So you ARE getting ready for spring, right?\u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s almost mid-October!\u00a0 \u00a0Yes, we are cleaning up from last summer, harvesting fall veggies and getting bee hives ready for winter&#8230;&#8230; And starting spring planting.
