{"id":450,"date":"2013-05-23T23:32:29","date_gmt":"2013-05-23T23:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenfreshveggies.com\/?p=450"},"modified":"2013-05-23T23:32:29","modified_gmt":"2013-05-23T23:32:29","slug":"note-to-self","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/?p=450","title":{"rendered":"Note to self:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Never leave a garden unattended for more than a day.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It explodes when you do that.<\/p>\n<p>Right after market last week, I left for a short visit with my Dad. \u00a0 There were a few tiny cucumbers and a few tiny squashes on vines that were just beginning to warm up. \u00a0I was even pretty much on target with weeding, etc. \u00a0And then I left town for 4 days.<\/p>\n<p>And it rained.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m pretty sure it must have rained squashes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_451\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-451\" style=\"width: 456px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gopherknoll.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3881-e1369348437647.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-451\" alt=\"IMG_3881\" src=\"http:\/\/gardengoodness4u.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/05\/img_3881-e1369348437647.jpg?w=570\" width=\"456\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3881-e1369348437647.jpg 1581w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3881-e1369348437647-288x300.jpg 288w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3881-e1369348437647-768x799.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3881-e1369348437647-984x1024.jpg 984w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3881-e1369348437647-1200x1249.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Summer Squash Explosion!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">We&#8217;ll have a nice selection at market this week: \u00a0white and gold pattypan, gold zuchinni, buttercup and tatume. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu\/newsletters\/hortupdate\/2010\/jun\/tatume.html\" target=\"_blank\">Tatume<\/a> (calabacita) \u00a0is an ancient heirloom. \u00a0Archeologists tell us it has been growing in meso-America for 8,000 years or so. \u00a0It is also one of the most versatile and delicious squashes we could have chosen for the garden. \u00a0 Easy to see why it is a staple in Mexican cooking. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu\/newsletters\/hortupdate\/2010\/jun\/tatume.html\" target=\"_blank\">Tatume<\/a> can be harvested young, as a summer squash, and can be used as you would any other: boiled, fried, grilled, roasted, added to baked goods, frittatas, omelets and casseroles. \u00a0It has a flavor similar to other summer squash, but a firm texture that lends itself to great grilling. \u00a0 If picked at maturity, (I understand it grows to the size of a soccer ball) it hardens to save for later as what we normally call a &#8216;winter&#8217; squash. \u00a0You and I will have to learn about that\u00a0together.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Need some <a href=\"http:\/\/food52.com\/blog\/6458-green-garlic-the-adolescent-allium\" target=\"_blank\">green garlic<\/a> or fresh Texas sweet onions to go with it? \u00a0We&#8217;ll have that too. \u00a0In fact, we&#8217;ll let you select just what you need for your recipe and &#8216;build-a-basket&#8217; to suit yourself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">New potatoes might be another fresh idea. \u00a0We&#8217;ll have Yukon Gold, Purple Viking and new French Fingerlings. \u00a0Purple Viking is one most people haven&#8217;t had an opportunity to try. \u00a0It has a beautiful pink\/purple skin and a smooth textured, pure white interior. \u00a0It&#8217;s good for baking, mashing and makes some great gourmet home fries.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_452\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-452\" style=\"width: 456px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gopherknoll.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3897.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-452 \" alt=\"New Potatoes!\" src=\"http:\/\/gopherknoll.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3897.jpg?w=570\" width=\"456\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3897.jpg 2592w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3897-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3897-768x574.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3897-1024x765.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/img_3897-1200x896.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New Potatoes!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Greens are still doing well and we&#8217;ll have beautiful rainbow chard, mixed lettuce, bloomsdale spinach, New Zealand spinach, Dragon Tongue mustard, arugula, turnip greens and kale. Pink Beauty and White hailstone radishes have a great radish flavor without a strong &#8216;bite&#8217;. Chiogga and Red Early Wonder beets &#8211; maybe a few Golden beets, too.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13px;line-height:19px;\">We&#8217;re still waiting for some of the other summer fare. \u00a0The Cherokee Purples and Black Krim tomatoes are finally blooming. \u00a0Green and yellow dragon tongue beans will be ready in another week or so, and even the okra is finally starting to grow. \u00a0It&#8217;s been a slow start, but we&#8217;re in for some real treats!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13px;line-height:19px;\">Can&#8217;t wait to see you Saturday to kick off your Memorial Day weekend with some Garden Fresh Veggies!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Never leave a garden unattended for more than a day.
