{"id":593,"date":"2013-07-12T22:38:41","date_gmt":"2013-07-12T22:38:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenfreshveggies.com\/?p=593"},"modified":"2013-07-12T22:38:41","modified_gmt":"2013-07-12T22:38:41","slug":"summer-maters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/?p=593","title":{"rendered":"Summer &#8216;maters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That red blush I have lately isn&#8217;t sunburn. \u00a0 \u00a0Maybe it&#8217;s too many tomatoes. \u00a0Boy, they&#8217;re good in the summer!<\/p>\n<p>Fresh peach salsa. \u00a0Pomodoro sauce (that&#8217;s the fancy name for good old homemade tomato sauce.) \u00a0Salads. \u00a0Some for snacking, some for slicing, some for making sun-dried tomatoes. \u00a0It&#8217;s sure hard to get any better.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gopherknoll.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/san-marzano-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-594\" alt=\"San Marzano 2\" src=\"http:\/\/gopherknoll.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/san-marzano-2.jpg?w=570\" width=\"365\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/san-marzano-2.jpg 1296w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/san-marzano-2-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/san-marzano-2-768x574.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/san-marzano-2-1024x765.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gopherknoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/san-marzano-2-1200x896.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re beginning to see the first real harvest of the <em><strong>San Marzano sauce tomatoes.<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0This variety originated in San Marzano, Italy and is renowned for exceptional flavor. \u00a0These are the same variety &#8211; but grown in good, East Texas sandy loam. \u00a0I can&#8217;t tell \u00a0you which is better, never having had the pleasure of a trip to taste the originals fresh off the vine. \u00a0But these are good. \u00a0Really.<\/p>\n<p>And you&#8217;ll still have a week or two of good availability for the big <em><strong>Cherokee Purple<\/strong> <\/em>and <em><strong>Black Krim<\/strong><\/em> slicing tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Black Cherry<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Hartmann&#8217;s Gooseberry<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Sungold<\/strong><\/em> salad tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll have the last of the beets and carrots this week. \u00a0Last until fall brings us some cooler weather, that is.<\/p>\n<p>All three kinds of <em><strong>okra<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; <em><strong>Texas Hill Country Red, Burgundy and Stewart&#8217;s Zeebest.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Fingerling Potatoes<\/strong><\/em> and the last few of the spring crop of <em><strong>Texas Sweet onions<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0<em><strong>Bell peppers<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>&#8220;Hatch&#8221; chili peppers<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Butternut Squash<\/strong><\/em>,<em><strong> fresh herbs<\/strong><\/em>, and last &#8211; but not least &#8211; those beautiful long purple <em><strong>Fengyuan Japanese Eggplant<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0I&#8217;ll bring a recipe along for a wonderful grilling sauce for them, too.<\/p>\n<p>As always, there&#8217;ll be a bit of <em><strong>Kale<\/strong><\/em> and <strong><em>New Zealand Spinach<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0&#8220;maybe* some <strong><em>Swiss Chard.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>See you in the morning!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That red blush I have lately isn&#8217;t sunburn. \u00a0 \u00a0Maybe it&#8217;s too many tomatoes. \u00a0Boy, they&#8217;re good in the summer!
