Grandma used to say if March came in like a lion it would go out like a lamb. \u00a0Here’s hoping…..<\/p>\n

The garden temperature during the ice storm Sunday night registered 17 degrees. \u00a0That’s about 4 degrees too cold for unprotected onions and 8 – 10 degrees too cold for the blueberries that decided to bloom a little early. \u00a0There are still at least a few that were at an earlier bud stage that made it through.<\/p>\n

I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sadness at the loss – but the good news is that the rest of the garden that was covered under row cover did fine. \u00a0I’m amazed at the difference that thin covering will make. \u00a0Row cover has to be one of the most under-appreciated of the gardening tools we have at our disposal. \u00a0 I checked soil temperature in the garden this morning – it was still around 41\u25e6. \u00a0 The good earth holds a lot of heat if we can just capitalize on that energy. \u00a0 \u00a0 The outside air temperature when I checked was 28\u25e6. \u00a0Air temp under the row cover was 46\u25e6.<\/p>\n
