We’ll be missing from Farmer’s Market this week as we turn our attention to family needs. We’ll try to see that Dana’s Health Food has a good stock of heirloom kale, New Zealand Spinach, Rosa Bianca and Japanese eggplant, okra, Red Ripper peas and melons the following Monday. Hope you can hold out that long. 🙂
That said, I’ll share some of the San Marzano sauce-making happening now in our kitchen. All the ingredients shown were grown in the Gopher Knoll garden – and the recipe will available at Dana’s (along with some of the great San Marzano tomatoes.)
We also have a couple of workshops coming for those of you who are thinking of your own fall / winter garden.
On August 22 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the East Texas Arboretum, we’ll join the Henderson County Master Gardeners on A Fall Journey. The program will walk you through all the planning, soil testing, composting, crop selection and preserving of your own garden fresh veggies! As all their programs are, this workshop is FREE and open to the public.
Follow that up with another FREE workshop on August 31 at 9:00 AM at Athens Organic. We’ll talk about using row cover to extend the season and control critter and bug damage, and include raised bed and square-foot gardening ideas for fall. You don’t need a lot of space to grow a LOT of food!
Mark those dates on your calendar and check at Dana’s for your veggies this week. We’ll be hoping to see you again at market on August 10.
