Melons at the market!

We won’t be setting up a stand this week at the Farmer’s Market – but our melons will be there!   Check with Dustin and Danae at Bad 2 da Bone BBQ.  They’ll have super tasty cantaloupe, Moon and Stars yellow meat watermelons, Crimson Sweet watermelons and our special this year:  Navajo Winter.

Navajo Winter watermelon

Navajo Winter melons are special for a couple of reasons.  One is that they are particularly drought resistant – a good feature for a melon native to New Mexico and Arizona.   Pretty desirable in East Texas, too.

They are also one of only two or three varieties that are known as “storage” melons.   They are reputed to remain good up to 4 months after picking.  We’ll be sure and try that out this fall with some of the last in the patch.  Right now they don’t last more than a day or two before they are eaten!

They aren’t seedless, but the really sweet flavor is worth a little effort.

There will only be a few watermelons, so if you are looking for an all-natural, chemical-free, heirloom option, be there early.

And thanks to our market friends for making our produce available to you when we can’t be there ourselves.  Just look for the Gopher Knoll sign at the BBQ stand.

Have a great weekend!  And start it out right with a visit to the Athens Farmer’s Market!
